I thought we had got past this point but apparently, we didn’t. It has been almost 2 years since Google notified everyone that they would be penalizing websites if they weren’t mobile-friendly. Even after 2 years we still see a lot of businesses not converting to a mobile-friendly responsive website.
Here is what Google said:
“Starting April 21, 2015, Google Search will be expanding its use of mobile-friendliness as a ranking signal. This change will affect mobile searches in all languages worldwide and will have a significant impact in Google Search results. Users will find it easier to get relevant, high quality search results optimized for their devices.”
What does this mean?
Basically, this means that if your website is NOT mobile friendly than Google lists other businesses, with a responsive, higher when a user is searching from their mobile devices. This will not affect desktop traffic or ranking.
How do I know if my site is mobile friendly?
You can check your site with the Mobile-Friendly Test tool. This tool shows how Google Search sees your pages.
What should I do now?
As of April 2017, 56% of traffic searches were coming from mobile devices. Now we are not saying that your business is going to go under if you don’t have a mobile site but you might be losing a ton of money. If more than half of your visitors are trying to find you on mobile devices then you might not be reaching them at all.
